Description

It’s easy! Any person can become a minister in Jordan regardless of where they were born, irrespective of their age, and yes, irrelevant of their qualifications.

There is a 35% chance for someone to become a minister if a father or a relative has previously assumed a senior post in the kingdom. Not to despair though, there is around 19% of ministers who have acquired the position based on merit while the remaining half would have made it to the upper echelons of power in Jordan through Wasta and connections.

The book reveals that a quarter of the 301 ministers in the last decade (2006-2016) were appointed to ministries that do no match their qualifications and/ or educational background.

Women ministers, for the most part, were more qualified than their male colleagues. However, they remain largely underrepresented. Only 22 women ministers were appointed making a meager 7% rate. Despite their low number and high qualifications, women ministers were subjected to unmerited and scathing campaigns targeting their capabilities, qualifications, self-confidence and credibility.

The book examines in detail the ministers’ blatant appointments of their relatives, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and immediate family members to senior positions without reservations.
